Seafish Standard Sampling Operating Procedure_Basic Video Mapping Seabed Habitats

A lack of information on the precise location of a protected marine habitat or refuge for a protected marine species has caused considerable delays in environmental impact assessments and at worst led to applications to develop shellfish farms being refused or withdrawn as regulators are unable to decide whether the farm site and/or access arrangements will or will not have a potential impact on a protected wildlife site (Seafish 2006 & 2007).

Effects of electrofishing for Ensis spp. on benthic macrofauna, epifauna and fish species. SR652

This report summarises the results of experimental work carried out as part of “Design and Trials of Electrofishing System for Razorclams – FIFG 57437 and Seafish IPF funding project C85”. The aim of the project was to design and trial methods of harvesting Ensis spp. using electrical stimulus with the intention of providing a more environmentally benign alternative to existing hydraulic and toothed dredges. The results of this study demonstrate that the effects of electrofishing gear employing relatively low DC voltage and amperage can be effectively used in the harvest of Ensis spp. without serious negative effects on the epifaunal and macrofaunal benthic community.

Seafish response to the proposed marine Special Areas of Conservation (SACs) and Special Protection Areas (SPAs) in English waters

Seafish does not possess the local data required to provide an accurate response to both the scientific case and the socio-economic impacts for each of the proposed European marine sites (EMS). We have therefore provided a general response that is applicable to all 10 sites because it addresses shortcomings that seem to be common to all or most. As a first and very general observation the means by which the current consultation has been conducted reveals a possible lack of understanding of the structure of the catching sector, the functions of its representative bodies, and the likelihood that individual fishermen will respond to documents of this nature. Our canvassing of individual operatives shows an extremely low level of awareness of the exercise, an even lower level of those who have even looked at the documents and a pretty infinitesimal number who have read, understood and responded. The original conssultation can be viewed at: http://www.naturalengland.org.uk/ourwork/marine/sacconsultation/default.aspx

Fuel Flow Metering for Fishing Vessels Phase-1 Preliminary Report

The objective of the Phase 1 work was to assess the available technology in terms of quoted specification, cost, transducer type and installation requirements, with a view to selecting devices to test. Work on Phase 1 formally started on 21 July 2008 and the agreed duration for the complete project was 2-3 months. From early discussions with suppliers of fuel flow meters, it became apparent that lead times for the supply of certain meters could be as much as one month. Given the proposed project duration and these supply times, it was vital to expedite decisions on which fuel meters would be tested within the programme. This report summarises findings thus far during Phase 1 of the work, to allow devices with long supply lead times to be ordered in time to ensure the project will complete to schedule. Decisions made on the devices to be tested are reported herein. These devices were selected in consultation with a representative SeaFISH during a meeting held on 24th July. As it is presented at a very preliminary stage of the work, it should be appreciated that the materials presented herein may be revised by the time of presentation of the final project report. The research team have already encountered one result that will significantly effect the direction of the work.

Biodiesel test engine cell facility non technical report

This report details work carried out on the design and installation of an engine performance test facility located at the Holman’s Test Mine, operated by the Camborne School of Mines (CSM), an academic department of the University of Exeter. The work was commissioned by the Sea Fish Industry Authority (SeaFISH) with the aim of developing a facility to permit the testing of biofuels such as biodiesel and biofuel blends in marine diesel engines. Engine performance test cells of this nature are generally configured to test various engines, whereas for this project, the engine needed to be a constant with the fuel being the variable.
